Structural Stress Analysis of Beater Wheel Mill
The pulverizing wheel is the main component of the fan mill, containing front disk, back disk, twelve beaters, twelve connecting supports and accessories.
The cracks lie in the dovetail grooves of the front disk and the back disk, where the beaters are installed, and they are observed in several locations of the dovetail grooves. Thirty-two fan mills are applied in four 600 MW steam turbine units, where eight fan mills are applied in each 600 MW steam turbine unit including six in operation, one on standby for operation and one on standby for maintenance. After detecting fan mills in the four units, cracks are observed in more than half of them. The operation time of the fan mills varies, where the shortest one is about 6700 h and the longest one is about 25,000 h. The crack depth reaches 20% of the thickness of the dovetail groove in severe ones. Crack failures in the fan mills greatly decrease the safety and influence the normal operation of the power plant. Failure analysis are necessary to determine the root causes of the cracks.
